“We didn’t know if it was a revolution or a party”

A RISO-LUSH exhibition at Poole Lighthouse Theatre

“RISO, is a digital duplicator known for its vibrant, spot-color printing capabilities, often described as a blend of screen printing and photocopying”

This was a great opportunity to showcase my work in an event that meant a lot to me. The exhibition wanted to shine light onto the sometimes overlooked history of LGBTQ+ activism in the UK.

My project focuses on the life of John Chesterman, a member of the earliest gay rights movement in the UK, the GLF. (Gay liberation front)

Risograph exhibition piece to illustrate the GLF’s movement at the Festival Of Light. The festival was a Christian led campaign masked as a moral event. Beneath the surface, it was a pushback against progress, targeting particularly LGBTQ+ people. They warned of “moral pollution” and railed against what they called a “permissive society.” But what they condemned was a society where people were demanding rights, and freedom.
